Cheap, good, colour sounder???

Postby mitchmcm » Sun Apr 15, 2012 4:45 pm

I know I'm asking for a lot but I'm thinking of getting a hobie outback in the next month or so, second hand so if it doesn't come with a sounder suitable to what I want I will want to get a nice colour sounder. I would like to think of getting one for 300-400 dollars but I know this may be a push though but just wondering what is out there.

Garmin Echo 300c works pretty good and only around $250. good, cheap and colour. I'm pretty sure there are a few options under $400. Just depends on what you want to spend and are happy with really.

I second the Garmin Echo 300c, top little unit that I've used for nearly a year now and still going strong. But I reckon the new Lowrance Elite 4x might have it beat for the same money.

ive got a lowrance elitex4 down scan imaging unit in my quest its an awesome unit easy to install the tranducer shoots through the hull picks up the ocean floor like a photo its perfect for identifying structures...there is a shopping trolley off our local boat ramp and it is unbelievable how clear it can pick it up.. i mainly use it from 30foot to 150 foot and it will still show very clear bottom images , bait schools, and solitary fish... im totally happy with it....however the screen is a bit small but for $230 aud its great ......i did look at the 300c by garmin and it did look like a good unit its just a personal preferecnce for me i have a lowrance dsi on my 23 foot savage and i cant fault it..

It seems sounders have come a long way since the one I won about 10 years ago. $500 unit and told be the water temp and depth with some grainy looking dots on a screen.

Might revisit the sounder issue again one day.

I got the elite 5 dsi on ebay from an international supllier for $399 delivered, as per the elite 4 with a bigger screen. Awesome unit with incredible images.

yeah id probly go with the elite 5 next time round just because of the bigger screen .... the ebay store i got mine from is in texas or somewere like that and the store name is westlake market....just had a look then hes got none left but he will get more ...i was told wen i was looking around if u want to find structures on your sounder get a dsi... if u want to find baitfish schools and use it in deep open water get a normal type of sounder..... saying that ive had my dsi picking up bottom clearly and baitschools at 190 feet deep ... do you really want to be in any deeper water than 200ft deep ??? i dont if you do though id be buying the garmin 300c

The Lowrance Elite 4 bought locally will just scrape in under your upper limit, and if you are prepared to import you can pick up the DSI version for not much more I understand. .
